If we are in a mood to create a waterfall or a stream then obviously a flat garden will be a tough job to go with therefore during this what is the best thing to do during excavation is pile the soil behind the pond and raise the area where you are creating the a waterfall. Trees:Though they are an agent of greenery but for pond they can be a horror in many ways as the roots can create problem when you will be excavating the pond and the trees could make the water dirty by constant falling of the leaves in the pond. You might be thinking of creating an ecosystem but the trees could destroy the natural set up very badly. Therefore there is a strict no to the inclusion of trees and shrubs like Walnut, Buckeye and so on.
Sunlight:This is a point that we do have to take into consideration. Sunlight though not on continuous basis is an essential requirement of the pond. The species living in it can grow up only with presence of sunlight. Thus our task is to check upon where the sunlight comes in and where it does not. Shaded place can never be a perfect place for pond construction.
Services:The place chosen for the pond should be such that it cannot create any problem related to electricity and lightning. The services like gas, water and telephone should be watch before choosing the place.
Visualization
Everything you do has to be inspected thoroughly. This point we have to do after we get free from the aesthetic or practical consideration that we were talking about. Size and shape of the pond should be planned now keeping the hose on the ground and then walking on it for several days so as to check how it reacts and work by the reflection that gets into the water. Everything has to be planned from location, where to keep the excavated soils, to choosing the location of filter. All this may also require your family acceptance and after all this the task of digging will start up.
