Malachite Green is an effective treatment for fungus and external parasites such as Ichthyopthirius (white spot), Trichodina, Costia, Chilodonella and Epistylis which are common parasites in garden ponds. They live in the mucus layer of the fish and cause irritation as hey graze on skin cells.
Infection can be spotted if you notice your fish excreting excess mucus, giving them a grey slimy appearance or white spots on their skin resembling salt crystal. These irritations cause the fish to scratch erratically against objects in the pond in order to scratch and maybe even jump out of the water in an attempt to do so. You should be aware of this type of behaviour, as early diagnosis is often crucial.
The most effective treatment of external parasites is the combination of Malachite Green and Formaldehyde. Formaldehyde enhances the effect of Malachite Green. When used with Formaldehyde, 10ml of Malachite Green should be used to every 1600 litres (352 gallons) of water.
Malachite Green, by itself is an excellent anti-fungal treatment for diseases such as Saprolegnia. This fungus commonly infects wounds and ulcers on the surface of the fish. It looks like cotton wool and grows on the infected area.
